Dads and Lads, Mums and Sons Reading Project
In January we started a King’s School Library Blog to publish information and reviews from our new Reading Project “Dads and Lads, Mums and Sons”. Our challenge to you was to read 10 books by December 2007 simultaneously with a pupil; son, nephew, God-child or friend, and to send us in your respective reviews. We would put these on the Blog and the best set of 10 for the year wins an annual subscription to the magazine of your choice.
We see this as an informal reading project for those students and parents who’d like to make more of their reading and take the risk of sharing their book experiences with each other. We’ve had a really positive response but would like even more. One parent finished their last review saying
“This reading challenge opens your eyes and your mind- everyone should give it a go. It's my choice next and I can't wait until the mobile library visits next”.
So join up now and start your summer holidays with a good book. Read the recommendations or let the Librarians make a suggestion.
Publishing for young people has never been so vibrant and so interesting. Visit http://kingschoollib.blogspot.com. for more information or talk with the Librarians.
Scholastic Book Club and Fair
The Library held a book fair in early May managed by the student library monitors and sold £270.60 worth of books. This earned us £162.36 commission. Thank You to everyone who supported it.
Café Scientifique
On Tuesday 17 July at 12.35 we will be holding our first informal school ‘Café Scientifique’ over lunch in the Library.
We’ve been inspired by the Cafés Scientifique held in bars, pubs and cafes around the country to create a forum for discussion and debate about scientific issues. Anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. The talks are strictly off curriculum and will be led by a visiting scientist on the subject of their choice. The scientist will start with a short talk after which anyone can ask a question. Run on the principle of free speech and respect for the individual, a chairperson will manage the discussion.
For this occasion only, packed lunches can be eaten in the Library during the talk. The Library will be closed to general use and entry will be by (free) ticket only. Tickets available on Monday 16th.
Our first subject is
The Nature of Scientific Proof or
Is there a Santa Claus?
See www.cafescientifique.org for background and other venues in UK.
Chris d’Lacey Visit
On 15 June the well known author Chris d’Lacey ran a writing workshop in the library for twenty year seven students. Talking about how he got started and published his first books we were amused to find out that his very popular series on Dragons started life as a conservation book about squirrels. He set exercises in how to write from the imagination and was very impressed by the students’ ability and humour. Chris kindly hung around at lunchtime to meet some other fans and sign some books. This event was coordinated jointly by the library and the Barrowby and Grantham Book Group and was kindly paid for by the PTFA.

Book and Biscuits
Book and Biscuits continues on Wednesdays at 3.45. We are currently taking part in the Red House awards voting . This term Mr Howarth and Mr Scott have shown us some of their most influential book choices. Mr Scott showed us slides from his Pacific Rim travels inspired by Michael Palin.
All Welcome.
Author Visits Coming Soon
Early in 2008 we are planning a visit from Justin Soper, author of the Vampirates Series, and are in discussion with Robert Muchamore, very popular author of the very successful Cherub series, for later in the year. Many thanks to Barrowby and Grantham Book Group for their collaboration and continued support.
